Put simply, she believes in helping people when they need it the most. Raised by a single mom who worked as a hairdresser, Jen learned first-hand the value of hard work and the importance of creating an economy that works for everyone.
It was Jen’s teachers who encouraged her to go to college, and by studying hard and working minimum wage jobs, Jen found a way to complete her education. From kindergarten to graduating magna cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law, Jen is a product of Georgia’s public education system. And because of her passion for fairness, Jen became a lawyer who stands up for those the system has failed.
Consistently recognized as one of the top 100 attorneys in the state (and top 50 women attorneys), she specializes in complex civil cases.
In 2015, Jen brought suit against the Secretary of State after she uncovered an unprecedented data breach where the Secretary of State’s office unlawfully distributed the personal information of every voter in the state, a breach that affected over 6 million Georgians. Only after Jen filed suit did the Secretary of State give the required legal notice to the victims of the breach and offer to provide credit repair insurance.
And when Karen Handel was Secretary of State, Jen fought efforts by that office to suppress the rights of Georgia voters.
She is a member of the Leadership Georgia Class of 2008 and is the past-President of the University of Georgia’s Law School Association Council. Jen is also a Master with the Joseph Henry Lumpkin American Inn of Court and serves on the Board of Governors for the State Bar of Georgia.
She has been named to Georgia Trend Magazine’s “40 Under 40″ list that recognizes Georgians “under 40″ who “will lead our state’s commercial, cultural, academic and governmental institutions into the future” because of her work on behalf of Georgia consumers. She has also been chosen as a Rising Star, a Georgia Super Lawyer, and as one of Georgia Trend’s Legal Elite. In 2013, Jennifer was recognized by the University of Georgia as one of its “40 Under 40″ alumni who “have made an impact in business, leadership, community, educational and/or philanthropic endeavors.” Additionally, Jennifer was recognized as one of the “40 Under 40: Rising Stars” for 2014 by the Fulton County Daily Report, the leading legal newspaper in the State of Georgia.
In 2017, Jen won a special election to replace Hunter Hill in the Georgia State Senate and then was decisively re-elected in 2018.
Jen’s record as your State Senator speaks for itself. From fully funding the state’s public education system for the first time in over a decade to passing a transit bill that provides the 13-county metro Atlanta region a path to tackle our growing traffic issues, Jen has worked hard to reach consensus where it made sense. But she fought hard against extremism when our values – and the safety of our children – were at stake.
A resident of Smyrna for almost a decade, Jen and her husband Lawton live in Atlanta with their two children, Lawton and Cokie.
